Why a Favicon is Crucial for the Modern Web

A Favicon (Favorite Icon) is the smallest yet most visible piece of your website's digital identity. It sits right next to your site name in browser tabs, bookmarks, and most importantly, in Google mobile search results (SERPs).

In the past, a single favicon.ico file was sufficient for websites. However, today users can add your site to their Apple (iOS) Home Screen or as an Android app (PWA). To ensure your logo remains razor-sharp and unpixelated on these devices, you must generate PNG files in various precise dimensions.

Apple Touch Icon

When a user adds your site to their Home Screen, Apple devices ignore the standard favicon. Instead, they look for a specific 180x180 pixel apple-touch-icon.png file. If this icon is missing, iOS will assign a low-resolution, ugly screenshot of your page as the icon.

Google's 48x48 Rule

To display your site logo in search results, Google mandates that your favicon must be a multiple of 48x48 pixels. Old 16x16 favicons are often rejected by Google bots, resulting in a blank, generic globe icon appearing next to your brand in the SERPs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What image format should I upload?

For the best results, you should upload a PNG file with a transparent background. Ensuring your image has an equal aspect ratio (a 1:1 square) will prevent the generated icons from looking stretched or squished.

How do I add these icons to my site?

Upload the downloaded PNG files to the root directory of your website. Then, copy the HTML Meta Tags provided on the right side of our tool and paste them inside the <head> section of your website's HTML.

Do I still need the old .ico file?

All modern web browsers now fully support favicons in PNG format. The .ico file is only strictly required for very old browsers (like Internet Explorer). Therefore, using PNG sizing has become the industry standard in modern web design.

Is my logo uploaded to your servers?

No! This tool utilizes HTML5 Canvas technology. The image you upload is resized 100% locally within your browser, and no data is transmitted to our servers. This ensures the process is instantaneous and completely private.
